OUR SOLUTIONS FOR MUNICIPALITIES:

DRINKING WATER PRODUCTION

Veolia supplies a large range of locally manufactured containerised and skid mounted systems for surface water treatment and potable water production up to 100 m3/hr in compliance with SANS 241 and WHO requirements.

These potable water packaged plants combine coagulation, flocculation, lamella clarification, sand filtration and disinfection using chlorination in a single, compact modular plant.

MOBILE WATER TREATMENT

Veolia offers a fully mobile, 4x4-mounted mobile and autonomous water treatment facility for urgent potable water production to SANS 241 and WHO requirements in isolated or emergency applications.

Our Mobile Water Treatment Plant provides potable water fast, reliably and cost-effectively, which makes them an ideal choice in critical situations.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Our packaged Sewage Treatment Plant (STP™) incorporates trickling filter technology, a simple but extremely versatile technology

that is easy to operate and requires minimal maintenance, to treat up to 600 m3 sewage per day.

Major treatment components include screening, anaerobic digestion, carbon removal and nitrification, sludge removal and disinfection in a chlorine contact tank.

DESALINATION

Ideal for applications with inadequate freshwater sources, our reverse osmosis process involves passing screened and filtered sea water through semi-permeable membranes at very high pressure.

This causes the salt to stay behind, while pushing through desalinated water on the other side. The concentrate (brine) produced is sent to a dedicated brine tank. Energy recovery systems help save electricity whilst backwash water and brine are stored before being slowly released back into the ocean.

Our seawater desalination packaged plant can produce up to 3 ML of potable water per day.

CHEMICALS

We manufacture the complete range of Hydrex™ flocculants and polymers for potable water clarification in potable water treatment and sewage treatment plants.

OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE

Structured O & M agreements benefit companies not just by ensuring plants are professionally maintained and can guarantee compliance; through continuous process optimisation, we can work towards lowering their overall costs of production over time.

Veolia can provide tailored O & M contracts best suit your specific requirements, providing the required skills, as well as spares and consumables on hand in the day-to-day running of your water treatment plant.

20 YEARS OF SUCCESS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

In 2019, Veolia Water Technologies celebrates 20 years of business in southern Africa. In this time, we’ve been the company behind some of southern Africa’s most important and forward-thinking water and wastewater treatment plants:

Durban Water Recycling Project - KwaZulu-Natal

The Durban Water Recycling Project is Veolia's flagship municipal water treatment project which provides major benefits to the city's eThekwini Municipality. It reduces water pollution generated by the area's population, while generating a lower-cost resource for industry.

A BOOT (build, own, operate, transfer) project, the plant treats and re-uses domestic and industrial wastewater with innovative and customised technologies developed specifically for this large-scale water infrastructure application.

Approximately 47.5 ML wastewater per day enters the plant for treatment to within near potable standards. The resulting water is then sold to the city's industrial customers, Mondi and SAPREF, for use as process water - alleviating strain on the city's fresh water infrastructure.

This feat of municipal water treatment engineering benefits all parties involved, including the environment. Industrial customers' operating costs are reduced due to the decreased demand for drinking water, the municipality can redirect this surplus water to other users, and no harmful effluent is released into the environment.

Drinking water infrastructure project - Near Palapye, Botswana

This Veolia-designed, built and commissioned municipal water treatment plant removes ground water hardness and dissolved salts from borehole water at a rate of 13 200 ML/day.

The hardness of the water was causing water infrastructure pipes, household geysers and appliances, such as washing machines, to scale, requiring more electricity to heat the water for general purposes and more detergents for washing to be effective.

The plant softens the water using Veolia-patented Multiflo™ high efficiency clarifier technology. Lime is injected into the water before the clarification process, and lamella settlers retain flocculants, allowing clarified water to flow through the plant. Collected sludge is concentrated in a thickener, pumped into a solar drying dam and then taken to a landfill behind the plant - completing the flow path through the water infrastructure plant.

The clarified water is chlorinated and then directed into the region's municipal water treatment's supply pumps. The quality of water produced complies with the BOS 32:2000 drinking water standard.

Walvis Bay Municipality - Namibia

This municipal water treatment plant upgrade boosted the city's wastewater capacity from 2 to 6.5 ML/day while using existing civil works to house newer-generation, more efficient trickling filter technology.

By using existing structures, this upgrade method was favoured for its lower cost, faster implementation and significantly improved capacity, discharge standards and ease of operation.

Service, Value and Responsibility

Through agile, customer-driven service, we create value for our customers, their consumers and for the environment. We take on the responsibility to help ensure that nothing of value is wasted, and that water infrastructure systems are as environmentally responsible as possible.

Veolia can reduce a municipal water treatment plant's reliance on the national energy grid with upgrades to recover electricity from sludge digestion processes. With a strong focus on R&D, Veolia aims to use biogas, heat and energy recovery to optimise municipal water treatment plants to a point where cleaner energy is fed from the water infrastructure into an energy grid.
