In Southern Africa, the availability of freshwater is decreasing due to climate change and population growth.
To address this growing challenge, Veolia designs and operates solutions that transform treated wastewater into a safe and sustainable source of drinking water.
Southern African water scarcity
and how we have responded
The Windhoek project
In Namibia, Veolia operates the Goreangab plant, a one-of-a-kind facility and the first large-scale installation in the world capable of producing drinking water directly from recycled wastewater.
For over twenty years, this plant has supplied up to 35% of the drinking water needs of the capital city, Windhoek.
The process involves several purification steps:
- microfiltration
- reverse osmosis
- UV disinfection
Ensuring water quality equivalent to that of natural spring water.
The Windhoek project is now internationally recognised as a global benchmark in direct potable water reuse. It demonstrates Veolia’s ability to deploy innovative, safe, and locally adapted solutions while strengthening the region’s water resilience.
